Aug 22, 1716 – Commemorative Bronze medal of commander Matthias von Schulenburg for his successful defence of the island from the siege of the Turkish army. Since the beginning of 1715 the Turks attacked both by land and sea and recaptured all the Venetian possessions in the Aegean and Morea in order to extend westwards. Venice, now having only the Ionian islands and the Dalmatian coast, entrusts the command of Corfu fortress to the German Marshal Count Matthias Johann von der Schulenburg. The siege lasts about a month with the Turks leaving with heavy casualties thanks to Schulenburg’s defensive plans and actions.
